The History of Eka
From the first conscious beings to rise out of the rock, to the order of mages that keeps the peace today.
Years are counted from the opening of the recorded era. Dates marked “about” are the best the chroniclers of Eka can agree on.Before the recorded age
Long before men, and before anyone had a word for magic.
The coming of the Ekores
The first conscious beings of the world rise out of the entrails of the planet — living incarnations of raw energy, and the oldest thing on Eka that can be said to think.
The First Sacrifice
A great part of the Ekores give up their own fundamental energy and let it spread through fire, water, earth and air. Every mage who has ever lived draws on a comfort he did not pay for.
The first age of harmony
A spiritual leader emerges among the first people able to feel that energy and learn to move it. For a while, magic and nature are held in balance.
The First Cosmic War
Year 0 to 1788 — Irides and Aros, and the quarrel that made the world what it is.
The source
Irides shows Aros the source: the remnant of magic kept hidden for three centuries, at the centre of the single continent of Paneka.
Aros drinks
Greed gets the better of him. The source is fouled and runs dry, and Aros comes away from it more powerful, and darker, than he went in.
The first men
Aros makes humanity, and settles it at the Jitag Ar. From this first making come those who will be called the Eseri.
The Eseri go north
They join the Elustari in the cold lands, and the Elustari teach them.
Mortal men, and a city of marble and gold
A second humankind is made, deliberately simpler, and mortal. The city of Jitag Ar is founded, and becomes the wonder of the world.
The war between Irides and Aros
Aros is trapped, loses his substance and leaves Eka altogether. The fighting gouges out the continent. Water fills the basin and forms Lake Ekamar; in its middle, what remains of a blasted massif will one day become the islands of Desiri Saor.
Faith, cataclysm and the birth of nations
Years 1800 to 2320 — the age in which the world breaks, and is put back together in pieces.
The Pantheon of Eka
The Paneka — then the only human country, ruled from the Jitag Ar — found the first religion of the world. The name will outlive both the land and the people, and end up meaning only the faith.
The discovery of Sokane
The explorer Soka Linen returns from a sea voyage and reports a great island to the south. The island will bear her name.
The hatred, and the exile
A campaign of hatred rises against the Ekores. The shaman Sipoe Linen refuses to take part in it, leaves everything behind, and founds on Sokane the nation that will bear her name.
The shattering of Paneka
The cataclysm of Irides breaks the supercontinent into Ekane in the north and Unkane in the south, and scatters the isles of Ikane between them. Sokane, older than the breaking, is untouched.
The Circle
Founded by those who felt a protecting presence in the natural world and named it Irides. Nature is venerated as the one eternal force; the dead return to it.
The age of nations
The peoples break away from the Jitag Ar and settle where they will stay; the Cereg is born in this span. In 2172 a civil war splits the Nanc into Leronanc, Osunanc, Lesunanc and Presta.
The Path
A faith devoted to Aros alone is founded in secret. It will be outlawed, and hunted, and it has never stopped growing.
Great wars and the long peace
Years 3056 to 3200 — the wars that made the map, and the institution built to stop the next one.
The Goreg era
Goreg takes power in the Cereg and opens a war of attrition on his western neighbours. The long siege of Fortsoc exposes an army that cannot count its own men, and forces the military reform the Talauraï still uses.
The Talauraï is formed
Leronanc, Presta, Osunanc and Lesunanc bind themselves into one federation — the war behind that union is the one nobody in it likes to name.
Aznar
The Cereg, marching on Inenbu, are stopped at Aznar. It ends their conquests, and it costs more lives than any nation is willing to publish.
The Venilsera
Out of the ruin of Aznar, Desiri Saor proposes a central magical embassy for every nation. The order of mages is founded, and with it the Seranel, its council of seven. The longest peace Eka has known begins here.
And then
Centuries later, in this same world, two twin brothers grow up asking for nothing more than a quiet life.
Where the novels begin, the chroniclers stop. The rest is in the books.
